TDP Counters Congress in No-Confidence Motion Debate, Raises Andhra Bifurcation Issue
In a heated parliamentary session, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) launched a sharp counterattack against the Congress during discussions on a no-confidence motion targeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishnadevarayalu from Narasaraopet accused opposition parties of using the motion as a diversionary tactic to create chaos and shift public focus from substantive issues.
Defending Speaker Om Birla's Leadership and Efficiency
Krishnadevarayalu strongly defended Om Birla's tenure as Speaker, highlighting his years of service and dignified conduct in managing the House. He emphasized that under Birla's leadership, the Lok Sabha achieved approximately 97 percent productivity, a testament to his efficiency. Key legislations such as the Women's Reservation Bill and the Triple Talaq Bill were passed with broad support during his term, showcasing smooth parliamentary functioning.
The MP noted that Birla ensured discipline and provided adequate speaking time for all members, even during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic. He praised the Speaker's initiatives to maintain parliamentary operations while adhering to necessary health precautions, underscoring Birla's commitment to democratic processes.
Allegations of Opposition Disruption and Frustration
Questioning the opposition's motives, Krishnadevarayalu alleged that government members were prepared to engage in discussions, but opposition figures were deliberately causing disruptions both inside and outside Parliament to foster confusion. He remarked, "People are closely watching such behaviour. It appears the opposition is acting out of frustration after electoral defeats," suggesting that the no-confidence motion stemmed from political setbacks rather than genuine concerns.
Recalling the 'Black Day' of Andhra Pradesh Bifurcation
In a pointed critique, the TDP MP invoked the controversial bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, labeling it a "black day" in parliamentary history. He accused the Congress-led government of passing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill unethically by closing all doors of the Lok Sabha and suspending live telecasts for hours, despite opposition from the state assembly.
Krishnadevarayalu expressed irony over the Congress now advocating for constitutional values and Speaker conduct, given this past action. He demanded that February 14, 2014, be officially declared a black day and called for a parliamentary discussion to hold the Congress accountable for its role in the bifurcation, urging them to explain their decisions during that period.
