Three killed, three injured in roof collapse during storm in UP

Agra: Three members of a family, including a three-year-old girl, were killed and three children were seriously injured after the roof of their house collapsed during a storm and heavy rain in Shekhupura village under Sidhpura police station limits in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district early on Saturday.

Police said strong winds accompanied by rain lashed the region around 5 am when the roof of the family’s dilapidated house suddenly caved in. Veerbhan Singh (30), a farmer, his wife Neelam (28), and their three-year-old daughter Kavya died on the spot due to severe injuries. The couple’s three other children — Kajal (10), Suraj (7), and Kiran (5) — suffered serious injuries.

Residents rushed to the spot and helped pull the victims from the rubble before the injured children were shifted to a hospital. Their condition was stated to be critical.

Kasganj District Hospital superintendent Dr Sanjeev Saxena said the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.

Veerbhan’s brother, Lallu Singh, said the family had been living in the house for several years and depended on agriculture for their livelihood.

District magistrate Pranay Singh and SP OP Singh visited the accident site and the hospital. The DM said the administration had assured the bereaved family of all possible assistance and that relief measures had been initiated. “Necessary compensation will be provided to the family,” he added.
