TMC Launches Counter 'Charge Sheet' Against BJP-Led Central Government
In a sharp political move, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday presented a detailed counter 'charge sheet' targeting the Narendra Modi-led central government. This response came shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) version against the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal.
Key Allegations and Counterpoints
The 13-point TMC document highlighted several critical issues. It pointed out how Bengalis have been targeted as illegal Bangladeshis in BJP-governed states, countering Shah's accusations on infiltration. The 'charge sheet' also addressed corruption charges by noting that several politicians labeled as corrupt by the BJP were later given prominent positions in BJP-led governments or the party itself.
Prominently featured were failures in security and governance under Shah's watch. These included the BJP's inability to control ethnic violence in Manipur, terror attacks in Pahalgam and Delhi, and high rates of crimes against women in BJP-ruled states.
Prominent Voices and Accusations
State Education Minister Bratya Basu and Lok Sabha MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad read out the 'charge sheet' during the presentation. Moitra dubbed Shah as "India's most useless and failed" home minister, questioning his silence on incidents like Unnao and Hathras, and the lack of women's safety in Manipur.
In response to Shah's attacks on infiltration, Basu questioned the central government's responsibility for border security under the Border Security Force (BSF) and demanded data on Bangladeshis excluded through the Systematic Identification and Registration (SIR) process.
Crime Statistics and Safety Claims
The TMC 'charge sheet' presented alarming crime statistics, claiming:
- The highest number of crimes against Scheduled Castes occurred in Uttar Pradesh, with Delhi having the highest crime rate.
- Rajasthan topped the list for crimes against women.
- Madhya Pradesh led in crimes against children and Scheduled Tribes.
In contrast, TMC highlighted that Kolkata has been ranked the safest city in India for four consecutive years, defending its governance record.
Broader Policy Criticisms
Trinamool accused the BJP government of plotting to strip citizenship through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), alleging that SIR was conducted to disenfranchise voters. The 'charge sheet' also cited economic and social issues:
- The current unemployment rate is the highest in 45 years.
- Over 1.7 million people have renounced Indian citizenship between 2014 and 2024.
- More than 1 million farmers have died by suicide since 2014, with Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh leading these statistics.
Health and Education Sector Failures
In the health sector, TMC highlighted critical shortages, including lack of oxygen in hospitals and a 68% vacancy rate for specialist positions in community health centers. Moitra claimed that only 0.44% of the GDP was allocated to education by the BJP, with many positions vacant in various central educational institutions.
This counter 'charge sheet' sets the stage for intensified political debates as both parties gear up for upcoming elections, with TMC aiming to deflect criticism and hold the central government accountable for its policies and governance.
