TMC's Abhishek Banerjee Launches Scathing Attack on NDA Government After Delimitation Bill Defeat
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday unleashed a sharp and direct attack on the NDA government following the defeat of the delimitation bill in the Lok Sabha, asserting that the Centre is "clearly on borrowed time." Banerjee, who is widely regarded as the second in command within the Trinamool Congress, declared that the outcome has exposed the BJP's "discomfort for all to see" in a significant political setback.
Opposition's Rejection and Fairness Concerns
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Banerjee elaborated that the opposition INDIA bloc firmly rejected the proposal due to deep-seated concerns about fairness. The primary issue centered on the government's plan to base the delimitation process on the 2011 Census while simultaneously expanding the House to over 800 seats. "The illusion of control is beginning to crumble in plain sight," he stated, delivering a direct swipe at the central administration.
The bill ultimately received 298 votes in favor and 230 against, falling significantly short of the 352 votes required for passage. Opposition parties had consistently maintained that they would support the women's reservation initiative but only if it was completely delinked from the contentious delimitation exercise, which they argued could distort representation.
Urgent Call for Women's Quota Implementation
Banerjee also pressed the government to move swiftly on implementing the 33 percent quota for women, which had already been passed in 2023 and came into force earlier this month. "If the NDA government is serious, it should immediately bring forward the bill to notify one-third of the seats. Do it now," he demanded, highlighting that the TMC had already ensured more than 41 percent representation for women in its own ranks as a model of commitment.
Heightened Political Tensions in West Bengal
The political tensions have escalated amid heightened activity in West Bengal, where assembly elections are scheduled in less than a week. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a massive roadshow in Durgapur, drawing enormous crowds and enthusiastic chants of support as the party intensified its campaign efforts across the state.
Simultaneously, Income Tax Department raids at multiple locations linked to TMC leaders, including MLA Debashis Kumar, have triggered a fresh political controversy. The party has accused the Centre of utilizing central agencies to "harass and intimidate" it ahead of the crucial polling, while officials maintain that the searches are part of a broader investigation into unaccounted money flows and financial irregularities.
The confluence of these events underscores a volatile political landscape, with the delimitation bill defeat serving as a focal point for opposition criticism and growing assertions of governmental vulnerability as election dynamics heat up in West Bengal and beyond.
