On Monday, four tourists from Kerala arrived at the Coimbatore district collectorate to demand the return of their cash, which was seized by the FST. The group, consisting of Jobi and his three friends from Ernakulam, had embarked on a five-day pilgrimage trip to Velankanni by car on March 19. In the early hours of March 20, their vehicle was intercepted by the Coimbatore FST at Velanthavalam.
The tourists claim that the squad seized a total of 72,800 rupees from them, despite each individual carrying less than 20,000 rupees. They allege that authorities deliberately treated their individual cash holdings as a collective amount, leading to an unjustified seizure. Jobi, who identifies as a farmer relying on fishing, stated, "We are farmers and mainly rely on fishing. My friends and I had carried not more than 20,000 per head. We fuelled our vehicle with the same cash."
Impact on Pilgrimage and Delayed Resolution
The seizure has disrupted the tourists' plans, forcing them to abandon their pilgrimage. Jobi explained, "We couldn't go for the pilgrimage as the cash has not been returned. It's been three days, and I had to go back to Ernakulam to get the required documents." Despite providing the necessary paperwork at the collectorate, the process has been delayed, with authorities asking them to wait for a callback.
