Coimbatore FST Faces Scrutiny After Tourists Allege Unjust Cash Seizure
A controversy has erupted in Coimbatore after the Election Commission's Flying Squad Team (FST) was accused of seizing cash from a group of tourists without proper justification. The incident has sparked debate over the enforcement of election-related financial regulations and the treatment of individuals traveling in groups.
Tourists Demand Return of Seized Funds
On Monday, four tourists from Kerala arrived at the Coimbatore district collectorate to demand the return of their cash, which was seized by the FST. The group, consisting of Jobi and his three friends from Ernakulam, had embarked on a five-day pilgrimage trip to Velankanni by car on March 19. In the early hours of March 20, their vehicle was intercepted by the Coimbatore FST at Velanthavalam.
The tourists claim that the squad seized a total of 72,800 rupees from them, despite each individual carrying less than 20,000 rupees. They allege that authorities deliberately treated their individual cash holdings as a collective amount, leading to an unjustified seizure. Jobi, who identifies as a farmer relying on fishing, stated, "We are farmers and mainly rely on fishing. My friends and I had carried not more than 20,000 per head. We fuelled our vehicle with the same cash."
Impact on Pilgrimage and Delayed Resolution
The seizure has disrupted the tourists' plans, forcing them to abandon their pilgrimage. Jobi explained, "We couldn't go for the pilgrimage as the cash has not been returned. It's been three days, and I had to go back to Ernakulam to get the required documents." Despite providing the necessary paperwork at the collectorate, the process has been delayed, with authorities asking them to wait for a callback.
This delay has compounded the inconvenience, leaving the tourists in limbo and unable to proceed with their intended journey. The situation highlights potential gaps in the handling of such cases by enforcement teams during election periods.
Questions Raised About Election Commission Guidelines
The incident has raised significant questions about the clarity and implementation of the Election Commission's guidelines regarding cash seizures. Key concerns include:
- How cash held by groups or families should be assessed during checks.
- Whether there are clear protocols for distinguishing between individual and collective amounts.
- The transparency and fairness of seizure procedures, especially for non-political travelers.
As election-related enforcement intensifies, this case underscores the need for precise regulations to prevent undue hardship on innocent citizens. The Coimbatore FST's actions are now under scrutiny, with calls for a review of their methods to ensure they align with the spirit of the law without overreach.
