Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) protesters brought major highways and rail lines to a standstill in a dramatic show of opposition to military conscription. Clashes erupted with police in Tel Aviv and central Israel as officers, supported by mounted units, moved to clear demonstrators who had paralyzed traffic.
Protests Triggered by Detention of Draft Evaders
The protests were sparked by the detention of alleged draft evaders, intensifying a national dispute over military service exemptions for the ultra-Orthodox community. The demonstrations highlight growing tensions between the Israeli government and Haredi groups over mandatory conscription.
Violent Clashes and Injuries
At least two protesters were injured during the demonstrations, including a 93-year-old man reportedly struck by a vehicle. Police used mounted units to disperse crowds, leading to confrontations and arrests.
The ultra-Orthodox community, which has historically received exemptions from military service, views conscription as a threat to its religious way of life. The issue has become a flashpoint in Israeli politics, with secular and religious factions deeply divided.
As protests continue, the Israeli government faces mounting pressure to address the conscription crisis while balancing the demands of the Haredi community and the broader public.
