The Uttar Pradesh Congress chief, Ajay Rai, has been booked by the police for allegedly making abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Kotwali Nagar police station on Saturday, based on a complaint filed by Neeraj Rawat, a worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Details of the Case
According to police sources, the complaint was lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for using offensive language against the Prime Minister. The BJP worker accused Ajay Rai of making derogatory statements during a public event, which were widely circulated on social media platforms. The Congress leader has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated.
Political Reactions
The incident has triggered a fresh war of words between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party in Uttar Pradesh. BJP leaders have demanded strict action against Rai, while Congress leaders have termed the FIR as an attempt to muzzle dissent. The state Congress leadership has expressed solidarity with Ajay Rai, stating that he will fight the case legally.
Ajay Rai, a former MLA and the state Congress president, has been a vocal critic of the Modi government. This is not the first time he has faced legal action for his statements; earlier this year, he was involved in a controversy over remarks against the state administration.
The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and are expected to record statements from witnesses. The case has added to the ongoing political tension in Uttar Pradesh, where elections are due next year.
