UP Congress Highlights Alleged Inconsistencies in Government's Women's Reservation Bill Stance
In Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh Congress on Monday raised concerns over what it described as alleged inconsistencies in the Union government's approach to implementing the women's reservation bill. The party pointed to contradictory statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the legislation's passage and implementation.
Congress President Ajay Rai Criticizes Government's Position
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai stated, "While Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier congratulated opposition parties in 2023 for the passage of the bill, in 2026, he blamed the Congress for its non-implementation. These differing positions reflect confusion in the government's approach."
Rai further claimed that the government has linked the implementation of women's reservation to census and delimitation processes, which he characterized as a deliberate move to delay its rollout. According to him, opposition parties have opposed this linkage, arguing it goes against democratic and constitutional principles.
Congress Demands Immediate Implementation
Rai emphasized that at the time of the bill's passage in 2023, the Congress party demanded its immediate implementation. He noted that instead of acting promptly, the government cited procedural requirements such as census and delimitation as reasons for the delay.
Referring to the party's 2024 Lok Sabha election manifesto, Rai highlighted that the Congress committed to implementing the constitutional amendment on women's reservation without delay if elected to power. He underscored the party's historical support for women's leadership, citing examples of women leaders who have held key positions in the country.
Key Points of Contention
- The Union government's alleged contradictory statements on the women's reservation bill.
- Linking implementation to census and delimitation processes, seen as a delay tactic.
- Opposition parties' rejection of this linkage as undemocratic.
- Congress's demand for immediate implementation since 2023.
- The party's election promise to enact the bill promptly if in power.
The UP Congress's statements come amid ongoing debates about women's representation in Indian politics, with the party positioning itself as a consistent advocate for gender equality in governance.
