UP Minister Lauds Women's Reservation Law as Historic Democratic Milestone
In a significant statement on Saturday, Uttar Pradesh Minister for Women and Child Development, Baby Rani Maurya, described the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, as a "historic and transformative" step in India's democratic journey. Speaking to reporters at the state party office in Lucknow, Maurya emphasized that this legislation marks a pivotal shift in women's roles within the nation's governance framework.
From Beneficiaries to Decision-Makers
Maurya asserted that the law would fundamentally elevate women from being mere beneficiaries of government schemes to becoming key decision-makers in the governance process. She highlighted that the Act, which envisages 33% reservation for women in both Parliament and state legislatures, is designed to make democracy more inclusive, sensitive, and effective. "The participation of women has increased significantly across various sectors, including voting, but their representation in politics remains inadequate. This law aims to bridge that critical gap," she explained.
Reflecting National Commitment Under PM Modi
The minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fostering a national commitment to the dignity and rights of women, which she said is reflected in this legislation. Maurya pointed to global and Indian experiences that demonstrate women leaders often prioritize welfare-driven sectors, leading to more people-centric policies. "When women are empowered, society becomes stronger. And when society is strong, the nation becomes powerful. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam lays the foundation for an inclusive and progressive future," she stressed.
Key Initiatives and Current Representation
Outlining the broader context of women's empowerment, Maurya highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by the NDA government. She mentioned schemes such as:
- Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which has improved access to clean cooking fuel for millions of women.
- Jal Jeevan Mission, enhancing water security and reducing the burden on women.
- Swachh Bharat Mission, contributing to better health and sanitation outcomes for women across the country.
Additionally, Maurya noted that women already hold nearly 46% representation at the panchayat level, showcasing their leadership capabilities when given opportunities. "This successful model will now extend to Parliament and state assemblies, ensuring more accountable and responsive policymaking," she said, expressing confidence that the reservation law will amplify women's voices in critical legislative processes.
