In a significant development in the investigation into the tragic Karur stampede, Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi on Monday, January 12. The probe relates to the September 27, 2025, incident in Tamil Nadu's Karur district, which resulted in the deaths of 41 people and left over 60 others injured.
High-Security Appearance at CBI Headquarters
Amid stringent security and heavy barricading, Vijay arrived at the CBI headquarters in the national capital at approximately 11:29 AM. After completing initial formalities, he was taken to the agency's Anti-Corruption unit team, which is leading the investigation into the deadly event. Officials indicated that the questioning is part of a thorough process, and the actor-politician is likely to be summoned again for further interrogation at a later date.
Widening Net of the Supreme Court-Monitored Probe
The CBI took over the investigation from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a directive from the Supreme Court of India. In October last year, the apex court ordered the CBI director to appoint a senior officer to lead the probe. To ensure transparency and progress, the court also set up a three-member supervisory committee headed by former judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to monitor the CBI's work.
As part of this widening probe, the federal agency has already questioned several office bearers of Vijay's political party, the TVK. In a move highlighting the scrutiny of administrative and police arrangements, the CBI has also summoned former Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) S Davidson Devasirvatham for questioning in connection with the case.
