TVK Chief Vijay Rejects Four-Cornered Election Narrative, Positions Direct Fight Against DMK
In a significant political address, TVK chief Vijay on Sunday categorically dismissed assertions of a four-cornered contest in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. He firmly stated that the real electoral battle is exclusively between his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Speaking at a rally, Vijay outlined an ambitious governance model centered on advanced technology and efficient service delivery, as reported by PTI.
"Only Two Sides": Vijay's Stark Election Dichotomy
Addressing supporters, Vijay emphatically declared, "It is not a 4-cornered or 40-cornered fight. There are only two sides here: One is TVK, the other is DMK." He framed the choice for voters in stark terms, asking, "Do you want an anti-people Stalin government, or Vijay, who loves people? That's all this election is about." This rhetoric aims to simplify the complex political landscape into a direct confrontation, challenging narratives of a fragmented opposition.
As part of his grassroots outreach, the actor-politician undertook a bicycle ride at the venue, symbolizing accessibility and people-centric politics. While a similar exercise earlier in Karaikudi had descended into chaos, arrangements in Kanyakumari were notably smoother, with improved crowd management protocols ensuring order and safety.
21st-Century Governance: AI Ministry and Digital Overhaul
Vijay unveiled a comprehensive "21st-century good governance" vision, proposing groundbreaking initiatives to transform Tamil Nadu's administrative framework. His flagship proposal includes establishing India's first Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, accompanied by plans for an AI City and a dedicated AI University. He highlighted the sector's potential, citing projections that AI could contribute a staggering USD 1.7 trillion to India's economy by 2035, positioning Tamil Nadu as a national leader in this frontier technology.
Further, he announced the "Tamil Nadu Citizen Privilege Card", designed to ensure doorstep delivery of welfare benefits directly to citizens, eliminating intermediaries and reducing corruption. "This isn't a story like the ones told by Stalin sir; this is scientifically possible," Vijay asserted. He criticized the current system as "not 'good governance,' but 'harassment'", alleging that bribery extends from officers to ministers. "We will break this chain," he vowed.
Legislative and Digital Reforms: Right to Service and Super App
On the legislative front, Vijay committed to enacting a "Right to Service Act" within six months of assuming office, aiming to guarantee timely public service delivery. He also introduced the "Vettri Tamil Nadu" Super App, a digital platform intended to streamline and digitize essential public services such as ration cards and driving licenses, enhancing convenience and transparency for residents.
Addressing fiscal concerns, Vijay alleged that Tamil Nadu's debt has ballooned to over Rs 10.5 lakh crore, claiming that borrowings in the last five years have surpassed those of previous decades. He framed this as a critical issue, stating, "Every rupee spent on interest is a rupee stolen from your child's education and your family's healthcare."
Democratic Innovations and Campaign Challenges
To foster greater public participation, Vijay proposed a "People's Forum" enabling digital engagement. Under this initiative, petitions garnering 5 lakh verified signatures would mandate discussion in the state assembly, empowering citizens to directly influence legislative agendas.
Urging voters to support his party, Vijay called for a "Whistle Revolution", referencing TVK's election symbol. "I have come for you, bearing all the pain, and I will never cheat you with lies. Give your brother one chance," he appealed emotionally.
However, the campaign has faced operational hurdles, including criticism over cancelled meetings and scheduling confusion. Vijay had to cancel a scheduled speech in Karaikudi on April 11, disappointing many supporters. In response, TVK general secretary N Anand clarified that the Kanyakumari rally would proceed as planned and urged supporters to avoid following Vijay's convoy to prevent overcrowding and accidents. He also advised vulnerable groups to participate virtually for safety.
Looking ahead, Vijay is scheduled to address a rally in Aranthangi, Pudukkottai, on April 14, though final confirmation is pending. Elections for the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly are set for April 23, marking a pivotal moment in the state's political trajectory.
