TVK President Vijay Petitions Election Commission Over Alleged Official Bias in Tamil Nadu Polls
In a significant development ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, TVK president Vijay has formally approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking the immediate transfer of key police and senior administrative officers in the state. Vijay alleges that the continued presence of these officials is severely affecting the fairness and integrity of the ongoing electoral process, creating an uneven playing field for political parties.
Meeting with Chief Electoral Officer and Submission of Representation
Vijay personally met with Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik at the state secretariat in Chennai, where he submitted a detailed representation outlining his concerns. The representation not only seeks clearance for TVK's campaign events but also urges urgent intervention from the ECI to ensure a level playing field for all political entities participating in the elections.
The plea calls for the Election Commission to take several critical actions, including demanding an urgent report from the state CEO, appointing special observers to monitor the situation, and ensuring that a uniform and transparent system is strictly followed when granting permissions for rallies and public meetings across Tamil Nadu.
Allegations of Pressure and Coordination in Favor of Ruling Party
In his submission, Vijay has made serious allegations, claiming that certain officials are acting under undue pressure and coordinating their actions in a manner that disproportionately favors the ruling party. This alleged bias, according to the TVK president, undermines the democratic principles of free and fair elections.
The representation specifically identifies key positions that are said to directly influence law and order, permission grants, and deployment decisions during the election period. These include:
- Police Officials: The Director General of Police (DGP), Chennai Police Commissioner, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), and heads of intelligence and armed police units.
- Administrative Officers: Senior IAS officers such as the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Finance Secretary.
Substantiating Claims with Specific Instances
To bolster its claims, the TVK party cited multiple concrete instances where its campaign activities have been adversely affected. These examples are presented as evidence of systematic obstruction and selective enforcement:
- Denial of Permission: The party was denied permission for Vijay's rally in the Perambur area, a move they argue was unjustified and politically motivated.
- Obstruction of Venues: Allegations include physical obstruction of planned venues through activities such as digging and barricading, making them unusable for campaign events.
- Selective Enforcement: The party claims there has been a pattern of selectively enforcing procedural rules, applying them stringently against TVK while being lenient towards others.
- Attempted Office Shutdown: There were reported attempts to shut down a TVK party office in Villivakkam, further highlighting the challenges faced by the party in conducting its electoral activities freely.
These incidents, according to the representation, collectively demonstrate a troubling trend that necessitates immediate corrective action by the Election Commission to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process in Tamil Nadu.
