TVK President Vijay to File Supplementary Affidavit for 2026 Election Nomination Corrections
In a significant development ahead of the 2026 elections, TVK president Vijay is set to file a supplementary affidavit in Perambur on Saturday to rectify discrepancies identified in his nomination papers. This move aims to correct inconsistencies related to pending cases against him and his age, ensuring compliance with electoral regulations.
Discrepancies in Nomination Papers Across Constituencies
The nomination papers filed by Vijay on Monday in the Perambur assembly segment stated that there were no FIRs registered against him. However, a subsequent nomination filed three days later in Trichy East revealed two FIRs. This inconsistency has prompted the need for corrective action through the supplementary affidavit.
Details of the Pending Cases
First FIR: Registered by Greater Chennai Police at the Peravallur station, this case pertains to causing inconvenience to the public during Vijay's rally in Perambur, which was held after he filed his nomination on Monday.
Second FIR: Filed by Madurai police during the party's second conference in 2025, this case is based on a complaint from an individual who claimed to be a supporter. The complainant alleged that Vijay's bouncers assaulted him when he attempted to climb onto a ramp used by the leader.
Vijay has clarified that he was unaware of the 2025 FIR, as he did not receive any information or summons from the police regarding the case. He mentioned it in the affidavit filed in Trichy East only after becoming aware of it following his nomination filing in Perambur.
Age Discrepancy and Electoral Implications
In addition to the case discrepancies, there is an inconsistency in Vijay's age across the documents. The papers submitted in Perambur indicate his age as 52, while the affidavit filed in Trichy East lists it as 51. This further underscores the necessity for the supplementary affidavit to ensure accuracy and transparency.
Expert Opinion from Former Chief Election Commissioner
Former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami provided insights into the situation, noting that returning officers are generally inclined to accept nominations unless there is clear suppression of facts. He emphasized that Vijay's declaration of the cases in his Trichy East filing demonstrates his bona fide intent, which could work in his favor if the matter is taken to court.
Gopalswami added that the supplementary affidavit is a proactive step to address these issues, potentially mitigating any legal challenges and reinforcing Vijay's commitment to adhering to electoral norms. This development highlights the importance of meticulous documentation in the electoral process, especially for high-profile candidates.
