In the run-up to the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, authorities have recovered 390 arms and 598 rounds of ammunition during raids conducted since March 15, according to the Election Commission (EC). An EC official stated that steps have also been taken to regulate licensed arms, with 41,706 out of 52,869 licensed weapons deposited so far.
Raids and Seizures
The recoveries were made during a series of coordinated operations across the state. The EC has intensified its efforts to ensure a free and fair electoral process. The seized items include a variety of firearms and ammunition, which were found during checks at checkpoints and targeted raids.
Licensed Weapons Regulation
In addition to the seizures, the EC has been proactive in regulating licensed weapons. Out of the total 52,869 licensed arms in the state, 41,706 have been voluntarily deposited by their owners. This move is aimed at preventing any misuse of firearms during the election period.
The EC official emphasized that the deposit of licensed weapons is part of a broader strategy to maintain law and order. The remaining licensed arms are expected to be deposited soon, and strict action will be taken against those who fail to comply.
These measures are part of the EC's comprehensive plan to conduct peaceful elections in West Bengal. The commission has deployed additional security forces and is monitoring sensitive areas closely.
