West Bengal's Electoral Roll Sees Significant Expansion, Reaching 6.8 Crore Voters

The Election Commission of India has announced a notable increase in the number of voters in West Bengal, with approximately 5 lakh new names being incorporated into the electoral roll over the past month. This recent surge has elevated the total voter count in the state to an impressive 6.8 crore, marking a pivotal development ahead of upcoming electoral phases.

Detailed Breakdown of Voter Additions and Application Process

According to official sources, the period between the draft publication of the electoral roll on December 16 and the nomination deadline for the initial two polling phases witnessed around 7 lakh applications submitted via Form 6. Out of these, a substantial 6,96,824 new voters were successfully added by April 9, which coincided with the last date for nominations in the second phase. Notably, when the final roll was published on February 28, it included 1,88,707 new voters, indicating that nearly 5 lakh voters have been enrolled since that date.

District-Wise Analysis of New Voter Registrations

The distribution of new voter additions varies significantly across districts, with North 24 Parganas emerging as the leader by recording over 71,000 new voters. Following closely, Kolkata added approximately 44,000 names, while other districts such as Howrah, Hooghly, and East Midnapore also reported considerable increases. Officials highlight that the majority of these new entrants are first-time voters, although some previously excluded individuals have been reinstated through the Form 6 process.

Current Electorate Statistics and Gender Distribution

The total electorate in West Bengal now stands at 6,82,51,008, with expectations of a slight further increase pending tribunal disposals. A detailed gender breakdown reveals that among the 6.8 crore voters, close to 3.5 crore are male, while a little over 3.3 crore are female, showcasing a relatively balanced representation.

Historical Context and Overall Decline Post-SIR

Despite the recent uptick, the Election Commission has noted a continued overall decline in voter numbers following the Summary Revision (SIR). In the pre-SIR period, West Bengal had over 7.6 crore voters. However, the draft roll saw the deletion of approximately 58.2 lakh names categorized as absent, shifted, dead, or duplicate, reducing the figure to just over 7 crore. The current tally of 6.8 crore represents a net decline of 83,86,521 voters compared to the pre-SIR roll, underscoring a significant reduction despite the recent additions.

This dynamic shift in voter demographics highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain an accurate and updated electoral database, crucial for ensuring fair and transparent elections in the state.
