Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday said, "What has to happen will happen," amid growing speculation that the Congress high command may take a decision on the chief ministership in the state after the election results are declared on May 4.
Shivakumar's cryptic response
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar refused to elaborate on the speculation but maintained that he is focused on the party's campaign and the upcoming results. "I am a disciplined soldier of the Congress party. Whatever the party decides, I will accept," he said.
Background of the speculation
The remarks come as the Congress party's central leadership is believed to be weighing options for the top post in Karnataka. While current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has led the government since 2023, there have been persistent rumors of a possible change in leadership, with Shivakumar being a strong contender.
Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president, has been a key figure in the party's Karnataka unit. His recent comments have added fuel to the ongoing discussions about the future of the state's leadership.
Election results trigger
The May 4 election results for local bodies and by-elections are seen as a crucial factor that could influence the high command's decision. Political analysts suggest that the Congress leadership may wait for the outcomes before making any formal announcement.
Meanwhile, the ruling party is confident of a strong performance in the upcoming polls, with both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar campaigning vigorously across the state.
