Commuters on the Chheharta-Dhand Road in Amritsar have been facing severe traffic congestion due to long queues of stranded wheat trucks. The situation has turned chaotic as trucks loaded with wheat are parked along both sides of the road, leaving little space for other vehicles to pass.
Cause of the Gridlock
The traffic jam is primarily attributed to the sudden influx of wheat trucks heading towards the grain market. Many of these trucks have been stranded for days due to slow unloading processes and a shortage of labor at the market. As a result, the road has turned into a makeshift parking lot, causing immense inconvenience to daily commuters.
Commuters' Plight
Local residents and daily travelers have expressed their frustration over the situation. Many reported spending over an hour to cover a distance that usually takes just 10-15 minutes. Auto-rickshaw drivers and cab operators have also been affected, with many refusing to ply on this route due to the unpredictable delays.
"It has become impossible to commute during peak hours. The road is completely blocked by these trucks, and there is no one to manage the traffic," said a local shopkeeper. Another commuter added, "We have been facing this problem for the past week. The authorities need to intervene immediately."
Lack of Enforcement
Despite the severity of the issue, traffic police personnel are rarely seen on the stretch. Residents claim that even when police are present, they are unable to manage the situation due to the sheer number of trucks. The lack of designated parking areas for heavy vehicles near the grain market has further worsened the problem.
Economic Impact
The traffic chaos is also affecting local businesses. Shopkeepers along the road have reported a significant drop in customers, as people avoid the area. Delivery services are delayed, and the overall economic activity in the vicinity has slowed down.
Calls for Action
Local leaders and residents have urged the municipal corporation and traffic police to take immediate steps. Suggestions include creating temporary parking spaces for trucks, deploying more traffic personnel, and streamlining the unloading process at the grain market. Until then, commuters continue to bear the brunt of the chaos.
