A tragic incident occurred late Sunday night in Nandambakkam, Chennai, when the landing of an iron staircase at a workers' accommodation facility collapsed, resulting in the death of a guest worker and injuries to 48 others. The collapse happened as hundreds of workers gathered on the structure to watch and celebrate the Indian Premier League (IPL) final, falling from a height of approximately 15 feet.
Details of the Incident
The workers, employed by a private construction company, were residing in makeshift housing structures built with metal sheets in Shanti Nagar, Nandambakkam. Sunday being a holiday, many of them congregated on the iron staircases and landing area to watch the live cricket match on their mobile phones and portable devices. According to reports, over 100 workers crowded onto a section of the landing area, causing the structure to collapse under the excessive load. More than 40 workers fell from around 15 feet, landing on top of one another and sustaining serious injuries.
Rescue and Medical Response
Local residents and fellow workers immediately initiated rescue efforts and alerted the Nandambakkam police. The injured were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals: 26 workers were taken to the Government Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Guindy, while another 22 were admitted to Ramachandra Medical Centre in Porur for treatment. One critically injured worker, identified as Brinji Manjhi, 31, from Jharkhand, was admitted to the Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday. Hospital sources confirmed that the remaining injured workers are out of danger.
Investigation Underway
The Nandambakkam police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. Authorities are examining the structural integrity of the accommodation and whether safety norms were violated. This accident highlights the precarious living conditions of guest workers and the urgent need for stricter safety regulations in such facilities.
