In a startling discovery, a suspected World War II-era unexploded bomb has been recovered from the bank of the Subarnarekha River in East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. According to officials, the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) from Ranchi inspected the site in Baharagora on Thursday. East Singhbhum SP (Rural) Rishav Garg stated that the BDDS team confirmed the bomb's active status and recommended army intervention for safe disposal.
SSP Piyush Pandey has formally written to the Army, requesting support from its specialized bomb disposal unit. While the origin of the bomb is yet to be fully confirmed, initial observations suggest it dates back to the World War II period. Police sources indicate that markings on the object, including 'AN-M64 500 lb… American… unexploded', point to a possible US-made bomb from that era.

Baharagora Police Station officer-in-charge Shankar Prasad Kushwaha confirmed that the area has been cordoned off to prevent unauthorized access. Villagers have been explicitly warned against approaching or tampering with the object, which was unearthed during sand excavation along the Panipada-Nagudsai stretch. The bomb is described as resembling a gas cylinder in appearance.
The BDDS unit informed the police that this powerful bomb cannot be disposed of using standard procedures, necessitating the army's advanced expertise. Pandey added that necessary procedural formalities are being completed to facilitate the ammunition's disposal, ensuring public safety remains a top priority.
