Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday paid tributes to former chief minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna on his birth anniversary, describing him as “an important pillar of Indian politics.”
Bahuguna's early life and political career
“Bahuguna ji made a strong impression on people as a prominent student leader at Allahabad University. He was actively involved in the freedom movement of the country. After independence, in the first general elections of 1952, he became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He got an opportunity to serve as a minister in the state government. His services as a minister of various departments and as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, in addition to minister of various central government ministries, were commendable,” Yogi said.
Vision for development
The chief minister said Bahuguna’s vision for the development of Uttar Pradesh was being implemented on the ground in the state even now. His contribution to the nation during his long political and public life was remarkable and serves as an inspiration for the present generation, Yogi added.
Birth and early activism
Bahuguna was born on April 25, 1919, in the Pauri Garhwal district of the then unified Uttar Pradesh, now Uttarakhand. After receiving his early education in his village, he moved to Prayagraj for higher education. From 1942 to 1946, he participated in the Quit India Movement, for which he was also imprisoned by the British.
