FanCode Partners with Sony Sports for ISL Television Broadcast Coverage

In a significant development for Indian football broadcasting, FanCode, the digital sports platform owned by Dream Sports, has officially sub-licensed the linear television coverage rights for the upcoming 2025–26 Indian Super League season to Culver Max Entertainment, widely recognized as Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI). This strategic move comes just over a week after FanCode secured the broadcast rights for the truncated ISL season through a competitive bidding process.

Background of the Broadcast Rights Acquisition

The broadcast rights for the 2025–26 ISL season were ultimately acquired by FanCode for a sum of Rs 8.62 crore. Interestingly, Sony Sports Network had participated in the pre-bid conference but decided against submitting a final bid, paving the way for FanCode to emerge as the successful contender. Following the acquisition, FanCode, which lacks its own television channel, immediately initiated discussions with multiple potential partners to ensure widespread coverage of India's premier football division.

Selection of Sony Sports Network Over Other Contenders

FanCode engaged with several broadcasters, including Zee, DD Sports, and regional providers based in Kerala and Kolkata. However, the decision to partner with Sony Sports Network was driven by several key factors. Sony Sports boasts an already established and robust market base, providing a reliable platform for reaching a broad audience. In contrast, Zee is still in the process of re-establishing its presence in the sports broadcast arena after re-entering the space last year. DD Sports was considered as a last-resort option, highlighting the preference for a partner with proven infrastructure and viewership.

Negotiation and Agreement Details

The partnership between FanCode and Sony Sports Network was initially agreed upon verbally, but the finalization of the paperwork and formal agreement experienced delays. These delays were primarily due to necessary legal checks and ongoing discussions to clarify the revenue-sharing model. Under the terms of the agreement, the financial contribution from Sony Sports will be directed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), which is organizing the league this season. Subsequently, these funds will be distributed among the participating ISL clubs, supporting their operational and developmental activities.

FanCode's Viewing Options and Production Arrangements

Since securing the ISL broadcast rights, FanCode has announced a tiered pricing structure for fans to access the matches digitally. The options include:

  • A season pass priced at Rs 299
  • A team pass available for Rs 149
  • A match pass costing Rs 25

In addition to the broadcast rights, the production of the world-feed for the ISL matches has been assigned to KPS Studios. This production contract was secured at a cost of Rs 5.22 crore, ensuring high-quality coverage for both television and digital platforms.

Upcoming ISL Season Kickoff

The 2025–26 Indian Super League season is set to commence on February 14, featuring 14 clubs. The opening match will see defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant face off against Kerala Blasters, promising an exciting start to the football calendar. This partnership between FanCode and Sony Sports Network aims to enhance the visibility and accessibility of the ISL, contributing to the growth of football in India.
