In a significant address to a joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha marking the commencement of the Budget session, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the critical need for political unity on matters of national interest. Speaking in New Delhi on Wednesday, she highlighted that issues such as national security and the collective resolve for 'Viksit Bharat' should transcend partisan differences, urging Members of Parliament from all political spectrums to speak with one voice.
Invoking Historical Leaders to Bridge Ideological Divides
President Murmu invoked a diverse array of Indian leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who are often associated with contrasting ideologies. She asserted that these figures consistently prioritized national interest over political disagreements, setting a precedent for contemporary lawmakers. Additionally, she referenced Mahatma Gandhi, Ram Manohar Lohia, Sardar Patel, and Deen Dayal Upadhyay to reinforce her message that despite varying opinions, nothing should supersede the nation's welfare.

The President's praise for the VB-G RAM G law, which replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), sparked immediate protests from opposition members. She lauded the new legislation for its potential to eliminate corruption and enhance rural development. However, opposition MPs vocally demanded its rollback, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members and allies applauded the scheme enthusiastically.
Further discord emerged when opposition protests interrupted Murmu's speech at its outset. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju later accused the protesting members of disrespecting the revered figures mentioned by the President. "India has demonstrated that power can be exercised with responsibility and wisdom. My government has sent a clear message that any terrorist attack on India will be met with a firm and decisive response," Murmu declared.
She also praised the government's efforts in uplifting backward communities and maintaining India's status as the fastest-growing major economy amidst global challenges. Additionally, Murmu referenced the recent free trade agreement with the European Union, anticipating it would boost manufacturing and service sectors, thereby creating new employment opportunities for youth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the President's address as inspiring, comprehensive, and insightful, noting that it reflects India's remarkable developmental trajectory.
