A light-hearted yet pointed observation about political lineage and ideological shifts created a moment of mirth in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, even as discussions on tenure extensions and organisational changes simmered in the background.
A Humorous Take on Political Evolution
While welcoming the new Chairman, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP Abdul Wahab referenced a remark made earlier by CPM MP John Brittas. Brittas had noted that the Vice-President's own grandfather was a communist.
Wahab then extended this thread of thought, adding that former BJP Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha's grandfather was also a communist. "Going by this trend, his (Brittas's) grandson will be in the BJP-RSS," Wahab quipped. He concluded with a smile, "That is what the history is telling." The remark elicited a subdued smile from Chairman Radhakrishnan and laughter from other members present in the House during the Winter Session of Parliament.
Confidence Amidst Uncertainty
In a contrasting note of assurance, Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India (A) expressed confidence about his political future. While most Rajya Sabha members set to retire in 2026 are uncertain about their return, Athawale, in his speech felicitating the Vice-President, stated he had been assured of another term.
He said this would allow him more time to be present in the House with Radhakrishnan as Chair. In a lighter vein, he added that his potential next six-year term would extend even beyond the Chairman's current tenure in the Upper House.
Organisational Buzz in Uttar Pradesh BJP
Outside Parliament, political circles were abuzz with speculation of imminent organisational elections within the Uttar Pradesh unit of the BJP. Reports of BJP national general secretary Arun Singh and general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh travelling to Lucknow on Monday, December 2, 2025, fueled these talks.
This visit followed a series of deliberations at the homes of several senior BJP leaders in the state the previous week. The speculation points towards possible organisational changes in UP, which is seen as a step to pave the way for the election of the next BJP national president. The state is politically crucial, scheduled for local polls next year and the high-stakes Assembly elections in 2027.
The day in politics, therefore, blended humour over ideological journeys with serious behind-the-scenes manoeuvring, highlighting the dynamic nature of Indian political discourse and strategy.
