Mumbai: The city recorded an all-time high peak power demand of 4,608 MW on Monday, stretching the city's electricity network as temperatures and humidity climbed. Utilities Tata Power and Adani Electricity procured over 3,700 MW from external sources, including green energy wheeled in from outside Mumbai, to bridge the gap between demand and local generation.
Heavier use of fans and air-conditioners across homes and offices drove consumption, while data centres continued to add significant load. Local generation contributed only 868 MW in total, with Tata Power producing 574 MW and Adani Electricity generating 294 MW.
This surge in demand highlights the growing strain on Mumbai's power infrastructure, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The reliance on external sources underscores the need for enhanced local generation capacity and energy efficiency measures.
Residents are advised to use electricity judiciously to help manage peak loads. The utilities are monitoring the situation closely and have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
