Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday alleged widespread irregularities in Karnataka's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. They claimed that officials showed 'zero regard for the approved process' and demanded an immediate inquiry and mandatory door-to-door re-verification of all enumeration forms.
NDA's Allegations
The NDA leaders, in a joint statement, said that the SIR exercise was marred by mass irregularities, including manipulation of voter lists and omission of eligible voters. They accused the Congress government of using the revision to favor its supporters and undermine the opposition. The leaders urged the Election Commission to intervene and ensure a fair and transparent process.
Shivakumar's Response
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar rubbished the allegations, stating that the opposition was 'worried' about the Congress's growing popularity. 'The SIR is being conducted as per rules. The NDA is making baseless claims because they fear losing ground,' he said. Shivakumar added that any complaints would be addressed by the concerned authorities.
Impact and Next Steps
The controversy comes ahead of key assembly by-elections in the state. Political analysts say the allegations could intensify the battle between the ruling Congress and the NDA. The Election Commission is yet to respond to the demand for a re-verification.
