Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Monday stated that the party high command will decide the next batch of ministers in the state Cabinet. He urged supporters of various leaders not to come forward with demands for Cabinet positions, emphasizing that the decision rests solely with the party leadership.
Shivakumar's appeal to supporters
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said, "I request all supporters of different leaders not to come with demands for Cabinet positions. The party high command will take the final call on the next batch of ministers." He added that the process would be completed soon, but did not specify a timeline.
The Chief Minister's remarks come amid speculation about a Cabinet expansion or reshuffle in Karnataka. The Congress government, led by Shivakumar, has been in power since May 2023, and there have been demands from several MLAs for ministerial berths.
Background of Cabinet formation
When the Congress government was formed, the Cabinet was kept lean with only 34 ministers, including the Chief Minister. The current strength is below the sanctioned strength of 34, leaving room for expansion. Several senior leaders and newly elected MLAs have been lobbying for positions.
According to sources, the party high command is likely to consider factors such as caste balance, regional representation, and performance of MLAs while selecting the next batch. Shivakumar's statement is seen as an attempt to manage expectations and prevent factionalism within the party.
Impact on state politics
Political analysts believe that the delay in Cabinet expansion could lead to unrest among party workers. However, Shivakumar's firm stance indicates that the party leadership wants to avoid any public display of dissent. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has criticized the government for indecisiveness, accusing it of failing to deliver on promises.
Shivakumar reiterated that the government is focused on development and welfare schemes, and the Cabinet expansion will be done at an appropriate time. He also assured that all eligible MLAs would be given due consideration.
