The Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) released its vision document on Thursday in Chandigarh, outlining key promises including laws against "forced religious conversions" and ensuring justice in sacrilege cases. The party also proposed organisational reforms such as the "one family, one ticket" policy.
Document Details
The 24-page document, titled Akali Ailannama, was unveiled by party chief Giani Harpreet Singh. He stated that it was prepared in line with the Anandpur Sahib Resolution. The document proposes a parliamentary board for candidate selection and bars the sitting party president from contesting assembly or Lok Sabha polls.
Key Proposals
- Anti-Conversion Law: A commitment to enact a law curbing conversions by force or inducement.
- Sacrilege Justice: A "strict law" to ensure punishment in cases of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib.
- Sikh Takhts: Safeguarding the "sovereignty of Sikh Takhts" and laying down procedures for appointing and removing jathedars.
Internal Reforms
The document proposes organisational changes, including a parliamentary board for candidate selection and a ban on the sitting party president contesting elections. It also reserves 40% representation for youth and 35% for women.
Preparation Process
The document was prepared by a seven-member panel led by Iqbal Singh Jhundan, following consultations with experts and religious figures. Jhundan confirmed that key recommendations from his earlier report, including internal reforms, have been incorporated.
Broader Agenda
The party outlined its broader agenda covering economy, agriculture, industry, social justice, and governance. Giani Harpreet Singh said the document remains open to suggestions and encourages feedback from the public.
