Kolkata: Following a fresh notification on reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) that reduced the quota from 17% to 7%, state government departments, public sector companies, and other autonomous or semi-autonomous organizations have begun revising their recruitment policies.
Revised Quota Implementation
The backward classes welfare department has notified a 7% reservation for 66 OBC classes in the state. A senior state government official stated that the government will now need to prepare a roster to implement the revised quota across departments. The roster determines the exact number of posts to be reserved for OBC categories. The department will consult the finance and personnel departments to prepare the revised roster, according to another official.
Impact on Education Sector
In the education sector, the University of Calcutta has yet to begin fresh recruitment for staff appointments, which has remained stalled for more than a decade. Under the previous rules, there was a 22% reservation quota, including the OBC-A and OBC-B categories. This now needs to be authenticated by the backward classes welfare department.
An official from the university explained, "All our rosters included reservation quotas under the previous format, including the OBC-A and OBC-B categories. Now we need to revise the roster, which must be authenticated. Only then can we issue a fresh recruitment advertisement. This will take some time."
The revision of the OBC quota marks a significant change in the state's reservation policy, affecting numerous recruitment processes across various sectors. Departments are now working to align their rosters with the new guidelines to ensure compliance.
