In a significant boost to the city's literary landscape, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to inaugurate 33 new public libraries. This ambitious expansion will strengthen the existing network of 56 facilities, bringing the total to an impressive 89 libraries serving all corners of the city.
Strategic Expansion Across Key Areas
The construction of buildings for the 33 new reading libraries is already complete, with authorities confirming they will be opened to the public shortly. The new facilities are strategically located in areas including Nikol, Ranip, Vastral, Rakhiyal, and Naroda. This move is part of a broader initiative to ensure that every zone, ward, and locality in Ahmedabad has at least one library.
To achieve this ambitious goal, the AMC is receiving active support from local councillors and MLAs, highlighting a collaborative effort to promote literacy and education. The corporation aims to support a diverse group of citizens, from book lovers and students preparing for competitive examinations to senior citizens.
Free Services and Modern Amenities
All AMC-operated libraries offer their services completely free of charge. Patrons have access to a wide variety of resources, including magazines covering topics relevant to exam preparation and subjects of interest to senior citizens. Additionally, readers can access multiple daily newspapers.
In a push towards modernization, the AMC is currently in the process of equipping all its libraries with CCTV and Wi-Fi facilities. The installation of CCTV cameras has already been successfully completed in 11 libraries, with the rest to follow soon, ensuring a safe and connected environment for all visitors.
Surge in Readership Reflects Success
The initiative's success is already evident from the remarkable reader turnout. Within just a six-month period, from April 2025 to September 2025, a total of 4,05,589 readers have availed the services of AMC-operated libraries.
This figure of over four lakh users is a powerful testament to the city's growing enthusiasm for reading and the vital role these public facilities play in fostering a strong reading culture within the community. The addition of 33 new libraries is poised to serve an even larger population, making knowledge and information more accessible than ever before in Ahmedabad.
