AMC demolishes 75 structures to clear TP road in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The estate department of the North Zone of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday carried out a major demolition drive in Saijpur Bogha ward to clear encroachments and restore a 30m-wide town planning (TP) road.

The operation covered the stretch from the junction opposite Saijpur Tower to the Kubereshwar Mahadev three-way junction. During the drive, civic authorities demolished 75 permanent mixed-use structures, clearing encroachments spread across 1,395 sq m of land. The action opened a 450m stretch of the TP road, which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area.

According to the AMC, the road was originally approved with a width of 30m when the draft Saijpur TP scheme received sanction in 1992. However, efforts to clear the road faced repeated legal hurdles, with civil cases being filed during initial attempts to implement the scheme.

The TP scheme was sanctioned in 2012, but subsequent road-opening drives also encountered legal challenges. After petitions related to the matter were disposed of by the Gujarat high court, the AMC proceeded with the long-pending road-clearing exercise on Friday under police protection.

Civic officials said the removal of around 75 structures has enabled the planned road width to be restored and will help improve traffic movement in the Saijpur Bogha area.
