Haryana ASHA Workers Stage Protest in Rohtak Over Unpaid Dues and Unmet Commitments
In a significant demonstration of discontent, ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers organized a protest in Rohtak on Monday, voicing their frustration over long-pending dues and unfulfilled promises from the state government. The protest, which saw active participation from members of the ASHA Workers' Union, included raising slogans against the Haryana administration and submitting a formal memorandum through the office of the Chief Medical Officer.
Widespread Protests Across Haryana
Union leaders confirmed that similar protests were held simultaneously across various districts in Haryana, highlighting the widespread nature of the grievances. The workers are demanding immediate action on several key issues that have been neglected for an extended period.
Unfulfilled Commitments from 2023 Strike
Anita, who serves as the district treasurer of the ASHA Workers' Union, provided detailed insights into the unresolved matters. She alleged that commitments made during the 2023 strike remain largely unfulfilled. Specifically, she pointed out that deducted salaries have not been released to the workers, causing financial strain.
Furthermore, Anita emphasized that a promised honorarium hike of Rs 1,500, which was announced to take effect from April 1, 2025, has not been implemented. This delay has exacerbated the financial difficulties faced by the ASHA workers, who play a crucial role in the state's healthcare system.
Operational Challenges and Lack of Support
Beyond financial issues, the protest also shed light on operational challenges. Anita highlighted that workers are being compelled to perform online duties without adequate facilities, making their tasks more cumbersome. Additionally, she noted a severe shortage of basic equipment necessary for field duties, which hampers their ability to deliver effective healthcare services in communities.
Threat of Statewide March to Health Minister's Residence
In a stern warning, the protesting ASHA workers announced plans for a statewide march to the residence of Haryana Health Minister Aarti Rao in Ateli on April 9 if their demands are not met promptly. This escalation underscores the urgency of their situation and their determination to seek redressal.
The protest in Rohtak serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by healthcare workers at the grassroots level. As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the state government to address these concerns and prevent further disruption in healthcare services across Haryana.
