Bhopal Rural Road Accident Deaths Up 21% in 2025

Bhopal: Road accident fatalities in Bhopal Rural police limits witnessed a sharp rise in 2025, with 155 people losing their lives and 562 others sustaining injuries in 567 crashes reported across seven police station jurisdictions.

Increase Over Previous Year

The toll marked a 21 percent increase over 2024, when 128 people were killed and 445 injured in 526 road accidents. This year, between January 1 and May 31, 72 people have already died and 217 were injured in 242 road accidents reported in Bhopal Rural areas.

Jurisdiction and Vulnerable Groups

Bhopal Rural police oversee seven police station areas — Berasia, Nazirabad, Bilkhiria, Sukhi Sewania, Parwalia Sadak, Gunga and Eintkhedi — covering the district’s rural belt. Senior police officials said more than half of all road accident victims were two-wheeler riders, many of whom suffered fatal head injuries due to not wearing proper helmets.

Time of Accidents

Officials said accidents tend to increase during evening and night hours because of inadequate street lighting and poorly illuminated stretches. Police have been conducting awareness campaigns in rural areas to educate people about traffic rules and road safety.

Bhopal-Berasia Road Among Most Dangerous Stretches

Police identified the Bhopal-Berasia Road as one of the most accident-prone corridors in the district. Officials said the road is relatively narrow and lacks a central divider, resulting in frequent head-on collisions. They added that in Bhopal Rural jurisdiction several village roads connect directly to highways. At many such junctions, the village roads are at a lower level than the highway, forcing vehicles to accelerate sharply while merging onto the main carriageway. The combination of speeding highway traffic and vehicles entering suddenly from village roads often leads to serious accidents.

Recommended Interventions

Police have recommended engineering interventions such as proper road markings, warning signages, caution boards and speed-calming measures on approach roads connecting villages to highways.

Nine Black Spots Identified

An analysis of accident data from 2023 to 2025 led Bhopal Rural police to identify nine black spots, or accident-prone stretches, across the district. According to police records, at least 65 people were killed in accidents at these locations during the three-year period. Among them, two black spots in Eintkhedi, and three in Sukhi Sewania police station areas emerged as the most dangerous, recording between seven and 11 fatalities each. Officials said identification of black spots allows authorities to focus on engineering improvements, corrective measures and targeted traffic enforcement to reduce accidents and save lives.

Integrated Approach Being Adopted

Bhopal Rural SP Pankaj Pandey said police teams are regularly visiting black spots and accident-prone zones to identify the causes behind recurring crashes. “We are working on an integrated solution through the road safety committee, which includes road engineering improvements, traffic education, enforcement of traffic rules and strengthening emergency care response,” Pandey said. He added that police are conducting awareness drives in villages, putting up awareness posters on road safety and writing to the concerned construction and road agencies to undertake corrective measures at vulnerable locations on priority.
