Bicholim residents have appealed to the Water Resources Department (WRD) to relocate an above-ground pipeline laid across the Bicholim walking track and install it underground. They cite significant inconvenience and safety hazards for walkers and fitness enthusiasts.
Background of the walking track
The walking track was originally built on a bandhara constructed by the WRD to prevent floodwaters from the Bicholim river from entering the town’s main market during heavy rains. Later, during the tenure of former Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal, the structure was developed into a walking track for public use while continuing to serve its flood-control purpose.
Pipeline installation and concerns
The WRD recently laid a pipeline across the track to channel stagnant water from the market area back into the river during heavy rainfall. While residents acknowledged the necessity of the project, they strongly objected to the pipeline being installed above ground.
Senior citizen Mohan Bhandare expressed his difficulties: “Many people who come here for walking are facing inconvenience as they have to step over a pipe that is about 1ft high. Many lose their balance while crossing it. I come here every day for a walk, but when I reach this spot, I am not in a position to cross it.”
Locals highlighted that pregnant women and elderly walkers have faced serious difficulties crossing the pipeline, with instances of women falling on the track due to the obstruction. They have urged the WRD to shift the pipeline underground to ensure safer access for all users.
The existing pipe has become a major hurdle for walkers, and residents hope for a swift resolution to the issue.
