Bihar Government Takes Proactive Steps to Secure Midday Meals for 1.3 Crore Students
In a significant move to safeguard the nutritional needs of schoolchildren, the Bihar government has implemented comprehensive measures to guarantee uninterrupted midday meals for approximately 1.3 crore students enrolled in government schools across the state. This initiative aims to ensure that no child misses their daily meal due to logistical challenges.
Priority LPG Supply for School Kitchens
Director of the Midday Meal Scheme, Vinayak Mishra, has issued directives to all 38 districts in Bihar to prioritize LPG supply specifically for cooking school meals. Emphasizing that meal service should not be disrupted under any circumstances, Mishra stated, "The primary goal is a smoke-free kitchen and timely meals. Any official who shows negligence in this supply chain will face strict action."
The government has proactively coordinated with major oil companies including Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and Indian Oil Company Limited (IOCL) to establish a steady and reliable supply of LPG cylinders to schools. IOCL has provided written assurance to supply gas cylinders to educational institutions on a "priority" basis, effectively eliminating fuel shortage as a potential excuse for meal disruption.
Addressing Rumors and Ensuring Supply Chain Integrity
Dispelling circulating rumors about potential gas shortages, Director Mishra clarified, "There is no shortage of LPG stock in the state. All 38 districts were directed not to let the supply chain break. Oil companies gave written assurance that the quota of cylinders for schools will always remain full, so that along with education, the nutrition drive also keeps running."
The government's approach involves meticulous planning to maintain the supply chain integrity, with district authorities receiving explicit instructions to prevent any breakdown in the delivery system that could impact meal preparation.
Emergency Contingency Plan with Firewood Option
While the primary focus remains on maintaining LPG-based cooking facilities, the department has retained an emergency contingency plan labeled as 'Plan-B'. In extremely unforeseen situations where LPG might become temporarily unavailable, schools have permission to temporarily switch to firewood for cooking.
However, Mishra emphasized that this alternative arrangement should only be utilized in "the rarest of the rare" cases and is not encouraged as a regular practice. "The headquarters did not issue any new order anywhere to cook food using firewood. This is merely an emergency arrangement that already exists," he clarified, underscoring that the firewood option represents a last-resort measure rather than a standard operating procedure.
