The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Himachal Pradesh government of failing to hold elections for three newly created civic bodies in the Jawali assembly constituency, thereby depriving residents of their right to vote. The party claimed that the government has been deliberately delaying the electoral process for political reasons.
No Elections Since 2020
According to BJP leaders, the three civic bodies—Jawali Municipal Council, Nagrota Bagwan Municipal Council, and Dharampur Municipal Council—were formed in 2020 but have not seen any elections since their creation. The residents have been without elected representatives for over two years, and the BJP has demanded immediate polls.
BJP's Allegations
Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson said, "The state government is intentionally avoiding elections in these areas to shield its incompetence. The residents are being denied basic democratic rights." The party also accused the ruling Congress government of being afraid of losing these seats.
Government's Response
On the other hand, the state government clarified that the delay is due to pending delimitation and reservation processes. Officials stated that elections will be conducted once the necessary procedures are completed. However, the BJP remains unconvinced and has threatened to launch an agitation if elections are not announced soon.
The issue has sparked a political debate in the region, with both parties blaming each other for the impasse. The residents, meanwhile, continue to await their turn to vote.
