The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has granted additional time to the Registrar of Nagpur University (NU) to submit an explanation regarding the possible formation of a committee to investigate alleged irregularities in the university's examination system. This development occurred during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), where the petitioner also highlighted delays in answer sheet revaluation and the resulting hardships for students.
Origin of the PIL
The PIL originated from a petition filed by Neeraj Dharashivkar concerning delays in the declaration of Winter-2025 examination results. Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, the court converted the petition into a PIL. The case was heard on Monday by a division bench comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Raj Wakode.
Details of the Petition
According to the petition, the university conducted over 600 examinations during the Winter-2025 session but failed to declare results within the prescribed timeframe. Nearly 70% of the results allegedly remained pending, causing significant distress among students.
In the previous hearing, the court observed that the university had prima facie failed to declare exam results properly and remarked that it could not remain a silent spectator in matters affecting students' futures. Consequently, the court questioned why an independent committee should not be constituted to investigate the alleged irregularities.
Monday's Hearing
During Monday's hearing, Nagpur University sought additional time to file its response. The court accepted this request, directing the university to file an affidavit and scheduling the next hearing for July 1. Advocate Bhushan Mohata appeared as amicus curiae in the case.
