In a startling incident near Koduvai, the metal sheet covering the roof of a government bus was ripped off by gusty winds and landed on a two-wheeler rider traveling behind the vehicle. The biker sustained minor injuries, but the event sent shockwaves through the commuting public.
Incident Details
The episode occurred on the evening of May 22 when the government town bus, operating on route number 15A, was en route from Koduvai to Tirupur with passengers. According to an official source, shortly after departing, the metal roof sheet detached due to strong winds near Sengattupalayam and fell onto the National Highway. A portion of the sheet struck a man riding a two-wheeler behind the bus.
Fortunately, the biker escaped with only minor injuries. Local residents noted that a major catastrophe was averted because the bus was traveling through a rural area. They remarked that had the incident occurred in a congested locality, the consequences could have been far more severe.
Passenger Concerns
Following the incident, passengers on the affected bus were transferred to another vehicle. One passenger expressed concerns about the poor condition of many government buses, highlighting loud mechanical noises and urging authorities to prioritize passenger safety and proper maintenance of the fleet.
Official Response
Ramalingam, the technical manager of the Tirupur State Transport Corporation, stated that an inquiry is underway to determine whether wind alone caused the roof to detach. He confirmed that the bus has been repaired and sent for fitness certification. He added, "Inspections will be conducted to identify buses with defects, and vehicles will only be operated with a valid fitness certificate."
