Chandigarh Administration Accelerates Key Projects Under Master Plan 2031 to Boost Global Events and Tourism
In a significant strategic move to elevate Chandigarh's profile as a premier destination for international business, events, and tourism, the city administration has advanced several high-impact projects outlined in the Chandigarh Master Plan-2031 (CMP-2031). This initiative aims to modernize infrastructure while preserving the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier, positioning the city to compete effectively in the global MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism sector.
International Convention Centre in Sector 17
A prime 5.6-acre site in Sector-17 has been identified for the development of an International Convention Centre, designed to host high-profile global conferences, meetings, and exhibitions. This facility will be equipped with world-class amenities to meet the growing demand for modern, purpose-built venues in the region. It is part of a broader plan to construct two 'iconic' buildings along Madhya Marg in Sector 17, which will serve as a strong entry statement to the city centre.
Architectural alignment with Le Corbusier's vision is a critical requirement, ensuring that the new structures harmonize with the distinctive character of Sector 17. The designs must reflect the original architectural principles, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the area while introducing state-of-the-art facilities.
Exhibition-cum-Concert Centre in Sarangpur
Complementing the Convention Centre, a sprawling 25-acre site in the Sarangpur Institutional Area has been earmarked for an Exhibition-cum-Concert Centre. The Tourism Department has appointed a consultant to guide this project, which aims to provide cutting-edge infrastructure for national and international events, cultural exchanges, concerts, and exhibitions.
Key features of this development include:
- Capacity to accommodate over 35,000 people for large gatherings.
- Extensive parking facilities for thousands of vehicles.
- VIP lounges and open spaces to enhance visitor experience.
This project is expected to retain major events within Chandigarh, preventing them from shifting to neighbouring cities due to venue limitations and traffic constraints.
Permanent Exhibition Centre in Sector 31
Additionally, a permanent exhibition centre is planned on a 6.4-acre site adjacent to the Industrial Area rotary in Sector 31. This site was reserved for an exhibition ground in the master plan, with boundaries abutting Purva Marg and Dakshin Marg. The centre will serve as a hub for commercial and institutional activities, further boosting tourism-related endeavors.
The two iconic buildings in Sector 17 will blend commercial, institutional, and tourism-promoting spaces. One building will prioritize institutional facilities for hosting international conferences, meetings, and exhibitions, while the other will focus on commercial and office spaces. Both will incorporate dedicated areas to enhance tourism activities.
Strategic Implementation and Future Steps
The renewed momentum behind these projects follows the administration's intensified efforts to implement various aspects of CMP-2031 and optimize land use. While financial strategies, detailed layouts, and implementation timelines will be addressed subsequently—depending on available resources and priorities—the current focus remains on securing approvals for the volumetric plans.
Officials indicate that further announcements regarding timelines and execution models are expected as approvals progress. These developments mark a strategic step toward modernizing Chandigarh's event and business infrastructure, ensuring the city can better compete as a hub for MICE tourism while preserving its unique heritage.
