Chennai: Days after a 33-year-old woman delivered a stillborn baby at eight months at Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children following an hour-long delay at the Urban Community Health Centre (UCHC), Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) commissioner G S Sameeran conducted a spot inspection on Thursday.
Commissioner's Inspection
The commissioner reviewed the attendance of doctors and staff, availability of medical personnel, infrastructure, and services provided at the UCHC. He directed officials to ensure daily outpatient services start on time and that referrals follow protocol.
Patient's Condition
According to doctors at Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital, the woman, Mercy Stephen, was in a critical state upon arrival. Dr. N K Mahalakshmi, the hospital's director of social obstetrics, stated that her condition was stable. "Mercy's first delivery was by C-section," she said. "There were complications this time as well, including internal bleeding when she arrived."
Dr. Mahalakshmi added, "An emergency surgery was performed, and 10 units of blood components were administered. She is recovering and is doing much better now."
Incident Details
A resident of Kannagi Nagar, Selvam, reported that Mercy was taken to the Kannagi Nagar UCHC on Tuesday evening while in labor. "As there was no gynecologist at the UCHC, she was referred to the hospital in Triplicane, located about 20 kilometers away," he said. The incident sparked protests in Kannagi Nagar.
