In Panaji, the residents of Chimbel have persisted with their chain hunger strike, now entering its 35th consecutive day, as they press for the relocation of two significant projects: the Unity Mall and the Prashaasan Stambh. The protestors are adamant that the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) must address their grievances by moving these structures from their current locations.
Demands for Proper Legal and Administrative Action
The protestors emphasize that it is crucial for the government to issue a formal notification that provides a detailed explanation in a correct legal and administrative manner. They argue that without such a document, their concerns remain unresolved and the projects continue to impact their community negatively.
Frustration Over Lack of Response
Ajay Kolekar, a representative from RG, expressed deep frustration over the situation. "We presented our demands to the North Goa collector on Friday, but so far, we have not received any response from them," he stated. Kolekar further criticized the communication from the tourism department, noting, "A notice from the tourism department is not the correct channel of communication. They do not possess any power or constitutional role to declare this to us."
Historical Context and Land Ownership Issues
The villagers have cited a letter issued by the IT department, which reveals that survey number 40 of Chimbel was previously owned by the IT department. This land was later transferred to the general administration department specifically for the construction of the Prashaasan Stambh. This historical transfer has become a focal point in their argument, as they believe it underscores the need for a more transparent and accountable process in handling such projects.
Call for Chief Minister's Intervention
In a direct appeal to higher authorities, Kolekar urged the chief minister to take immediate action. "The chief minister should convene a meeting and instruct the GTDC chairperson and secretary to shift both projects, along with specifying the time and date for the relocation, and reinstate the destroyed area," he asserted. This call highlights the residents' desire for a swift and decisive resolution to the ongoing dispute.
The hunger strike, now in its fifth week, reflects the growing desperation and determination of the Chimbel community. As the days pass without a satisfactory response, the protestors remain steadfast in their demand for justice and proper administrative handling of the issue.
