Chief Justice of India (CJI) and patron-in-chief of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Justice Surya Kant, inaugurated a mega camp-cum-awareness programme on NALSA schemes and government welfare schemes under the theme 'Bridging the Gap' at Marngar in Ri Bhoi district on Saturday.
The camp was conducted by the Meghalaya High Court and the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) in partnership with the state government to ensure last-mile delivery of NALSA social welfare benefits and government schemes.
Justice Kant emphasized that healthcare access, educational support, livelihood opportunities, and rehabilitation assistance are being brought into convergence mode through these awareness camps. He stated, 'It is very essential that under one roof all these welfare schemes implemented by government departments and legal organisations are made available to all.' He acknowledged the role of para-legal volunteers as the 'backbone of legal service at the grassroots' and urged authorities to strengthen their recruitment.
Lahkmen Rymbui, the state law minister, said, 'MSLSA have devised a comprehensive legal service programme in the form of State Action Plan. Effort has been made to ensure that they are suitable to the local circumstances, to effectively address the plethora of problems faced by the people of the state; while ensuring consonance with the national laws and plan of action.'
Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice Revati Mohite Dere, described the mega camp as a 'promise to the people' to make legal help available at the doorstep.
