Residents of Coimbatore have voiced strong opposition against a private apartment in Urumandampalayam for releasing treated wastewater onto the road, causing significant inconvenience to the public. The apartment, located in ward 13, has been discharging treated water onto the road every night, according to multiple sources.
Residents Express Concerns
A local resident highlighted that the apartment should either release the treated wastewater into a proper drain or connect it to the sewer system. The water flows along the road for almost a kilometer, passing by a private school. This has led to water stagnation on the road, which is one of the primary reasons for frequent road damage. Pedestrians and bikers face considerable difficulties due to the stagnant water, making the road hazardous.
Official Apathy Condemned
M Devendran, secretary of the Coimbatore district road protection committee, stated that despite several representations to the ward councillor and concerned officials, no action has been initiated against the apartment management. He strongly condemned the official apathy and demanded strict action. He questioned the basis on which the apartment is permitted to discharge water outside its premises.
Corporation Commissioner Assures Action
When contacted, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran assured immediate action. He said that if the allegations are proven, a notice will be served on the apartment management, and a penalty will be imposed for failing to comply with norms. He also mentioned that similar complaints elsewhere in the city will be addressed promptly.
The issue has sparked a debate on the enforcement of environmental norms and the responsibility of apartment complexes in managing wastewater. Residents hope that the commissioner's assurance will lead to swift resolution and prevent further damage to the road and inconvenience to the public.
