Varanasi: A 32-year-old accused in cow slaughtering cases, identified as Arif alias Fusi, was arrested after sustaining a bullet injury during an exchange of fire with Kaptanganj police in Azamgarh district early Saturday morning.
Details of the Incident
Azamgarh's ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain stated that Kaptanganj police were conducting night patrol when informers alerted them around 2:20 am about the movement of two criminals involved in cow slaughtering incidents between Dharauli and Kushmahra on a motorcycle. The police acted swiftly, cordoned off the area, and attempted to intercept the duo.
However, upon realizing they were surrounded, the criminals opened fire on the police. In retaliatory action, one criminal suffered a bullet injury to his right leg, while his accomplice managed to escape, Jain added.
Arrest and Recovery
Police arrested the injured criminal, identified as Arif alias Fusi of Sahpur Sarain. They recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges, and a motorcycle from his possession. He was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Previous Involvement in Cow Slaughter Cases
Jain mentioned that on May 12, a case under the Cow Slaughter Prevention Act was registered at Kaptanganj police station after the remains of a butchered animal were found behind CHC Chhituwa Kushmahra. During the investigation, Arif and his gang members were implicated. Several cases of cow slaughter and theft have been lodged against Arif, who was also booked under the Gangster Act.
