A 35-year-old electrician, identified as Rajesh Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide at his rented accommodation in the Haibowal area of Ludhiana on Monday. According to the police, the man was under immense financial stress due to mounting debts and was unable to repay them.
Incident Details
The incident came to light when the landlord noticed that the room was locked from inside and no one was responding to calls. The police were informed, and they broke open the door to find Rajesh hanging from the ceiling fan. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
Financial Troubles
Rajesh worked as an electrician in a local factory and lived with his family. However, his wife and children had gone to their native village a few days ago. Friends and neighbors revealed that Rajesh had borrowed money from several people and was struggling to repay the loans. He had also been under treatment for depression for the past few months.
The police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and are investigating the matter. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Growing Concern
This incident highlights the growing issue of debt-related suicides among the working class in India. According to recent reports, financial distress remains one of the leading causes of suicide in the country, especially among daily wage earners and small business owners.
