Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Employees Rally for Policy Reforms and Welfare Measures
The Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Government Employees and Teachers' Association (TANDAGETA) took a significant step on Sunday by organizing a bike rally and indoor meeting in Madurai. The event aimed to press for crucial policy changes and enhanced welfare measures for differently abled employees working in the government sector.
Rally and Meeting Details
The rally commenced at Palanganatham Roundana and concluded at CSI Higher Secondary School in Pasumalai. Approximately 120 members participated in the indoor meeting, where they engaged in detailed discussions about the demands to be submitted to both the state and Union governments.
Key Demands Highlighted
Selvakumar, the organizer of the event, outlined several primary demands. One of the main points is a demand for a 4% reservation in promotions for differently abled employees. TANDAGETA is advocating for this reservation to be applied retroactively to employees who have been working in the government sector since June 30, 2016.
Additionally, the association emphasized the need for improved administrative processes. Selvakumar noted that differently abled employees often face the burden of traveling to other districts to resolve routine administrative issues. "We are advocating for provisions to deal with these issues using online tools like video conferencing, rather than requiring travel," he stated.
Financial Relief and Accessibility Measures
The association also sought various financial relief measures to alleviate the economic strain on differently abled individuals. "These measures are seen as essential steps towards reducing the financial burden on differently abled individuals and promoting their economic independence," Selvakumar explained. The demands include:
- Income tax exemption for differently abled employees
- GST exemption on four-wheelers
- Toll fee waivers
These demands have been formally communicated to Members of Parliament and the Union government for consideration.
Accessibility Audits Conducted
In a proactive move, TANDAGETA members have conducted audits of ramps and restroom facilities in central and state government offices, as well as public sector undertakings. These audits are designed to assess accessibility and identify gaps that need to be addressed to ensure a more inclusive work environment.
The rally and meeting underscore the ongoing efforts by TANDAGETA to champion the rights and welfare of differently abled employees in Tamil Nadu, pushing for systemic changes that foster equality and support in the government sector.
