The Karnataka government has officially requested the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) to assist in redesigning the speed breakers on the crucial Hubballi-Dharwad road. This decision comes after numerous complaints from commuters about the poorly designed humps that pose safety risks and cause significant inconvenience.
Issues with Current Speed Breakers
Most of the existing speed breakers are laid in a short circular shape and are poorly marked, making them difficult to spot, especially at night. According to local traffic authorities, there are over 30 such unscientific speed breakers along the stretch between Hubballi and Dharwad. These humps have been blamed for causing sudden braking, leading to rear-end collisions and discomfort for passengers.
DULT's Role and Expertise
DULT, known for its expertise in urban transport planning, will conduct a comprehensive survey of the road to identify problematic speed breakers. The agency will recommend standardised designs that comply with Indian Road Congress (IRC) norms. An official from DULT stated, "Our aim is to ensure that speed breakers are designed for optimal safety without disrupting traffic flow. We will engage with local stakeholders to finalise the redesign."
Timeline and Implementation
The redesign process is expected to begin within a month, with priority given to high-traffic areas near hospitals and schools. The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation will oversee the implementation, with an estimated budget of ₹2 crore allocated for the project. The work is likely to be completed by the end of the year, subject to weather conditions.
Public Reaction and Safety Concerns
Residents and daily commuters have welcomed the move. A local auto-rickshaw driver said, "These humps are dangerous, especially during rains. We hope DULT will fix them soon." The redesign will include proper signage, reflective paint, and gradual slopes to reduce vehicle damage and improve safety for all road users.
