Farmer Dies Saving Grandson from Open Borewell in Nalgonda

A tragic incident occurred in Nalgonda district of Telangana, where a 55-year-old farmer lost his life while attempting to rescue his four-year-old grandson from an open borewell. The incident took place on Saturday in Utlapally village, when the farmer, identified as A Venkanna, was working in his agricultural field accompanied by his grandson Himansh and granddaughter Lohita, aged 7.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to police, the children were playing in the field when Himansh accidentally fell into the open borewell. Venkanna, in a desperate attempt to rescue the boy, leaned into the borewell but lost his balance and slipped in headfirst. Lohita, who witnessed the fall, immediately alerted a passerby, who then informed the local sarpanch.

Swift Response from Authorities

Miryalaguda Rural sub-inspector M Laxmaiah was nearby on another investigation when he received the information. He stated, "I immediately rushed to the spot along with a constable. On the way, we alerted the fire department, arranged for an ambulance and called for an earthmover. By the time we reached, several villagers had already gathered there."

Rescue Operation

Police, along with villagers, launched a rescue operation. A local volunteer courageously entered the borewell with a rope tied around his legs. He first brought out Venkanna and then the boy. "The boy was safe but Venkanna was unconscious when he was pulled out. We shifted him to the area hospital where doctors declared him dead. We suspect suffocation and heat inside the borewell may have caused his death," said the SI.

Legal and Aftermath

Venkanna's body was handed over to his family after postmortem. Police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). This incident highlights the dangers of open borewells in agricultural areas and the need for proper safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
