Karnataka has witnessed a steady crime rate involving foreign nationals over the past few years, according to recent data from the state police. Despite a surge in tourist arrivals, the number of crimes committed by or against foreigners has not shown a significant upward trend, officials said.
Data Highlights
The data, compiled by the Karnataka State Police, reveals that the percentage of crimes involving foreigners has remained consistent, accounting for a minuscule fraction of total crimes registered in the state. In 2023, a total of 1.2 lakh cognizable offenses were reported, of which only 0.2% involved foreign nationals. This figure has remained stable over the past five years, with minor fluctuations.
Crime Types and Trends
Most cases involving foreigners fall under categories such as theft, cheating, and cybercrime. Instances of violent crimes are rare. The police attribute the stability to increased surveillance, community policing, and awareness campaigns targeting both tourists and locals. Additionally, the introduction of a dedicated helpline for tourists has helped in swift resolution of minor grievances.
Regional Distribution
Bengaluru, being the state's capital and a major tourist hub, accounts for the highest number of cases involving foreigners, followed by coastal districts like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. However, even in these areas, the rate has not surpassed the national average for similar tourist-heavy regions.
Government Measures
The Karnataka government has implemented several measures to ensure the safety of foreign visitors. These include increased police patrolling in tourist hotspots, installation of CCTV cameras, and coordination with hotel associations to report suspicious activities. The state tourism department also conducts regular training programs for hospitality staff on handling emergencies.
International Perception
Officials believe that the steady crime rate has helped Karnataka maintain a positive image among international tourists. The state continues to attract a large number of foreign visitors, with over 8 lakh tourists arriving in 2023, a 15% increase from the previous year. The crime rate stability is seen as a key factor in sustaining this growth.
Police commissioner R. Hithendra stated, "Our focus remains on proactive policing and community engagement. The data reassures us that our efforts are yielding results, but we will continue to monitor and adapt to emerging challenges."
While the overall crime rate involving foreigners is steady, authorities urge tourists to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. The state police have also launched a mobile app for tourists to report incidents and access emergency services.
