Goa's Special Education Initiative Sees Exponential Growth, Supporting Over 11,000 Students
In a significant boost to inclusive education, the state government of Goa has reported that a total of 11,166 special children are currently receiving aid under its scheme for the education of children with special needs. These students are enrolled across 30 dedicated special schools and 74 resource rooms integrated within regular schools throughout the state.
Substantial Increase in Funding and Beneficiaries
The academic year 2025-26 has witnessed a remarkable surge in both financial commitment and outreach. Official data reveals that the state government allocated Rs 2.8 crore under the scheme during this period. This represents a dramatic increase compared to the previous academic year, 2024-25, when only 680 students benefited from the program, with total state expenditure amounting to Rs 41 lakh.
Comprehensive Support Services Provided
The scheme is designed to offer a holistic range of support to ensure the educational development of children with disabilities. Key aids provided include:
- Access to speech therapists and physiotherapists.
- Financial allowances for transportation and escort services.
- Assistance for the purchase of specialized equipment.
A specific escort allowance is allocated to students with severe disabilities to facilitate their participation in resource rooms within regular schools. This initiative is a core component of the state's push for more inclusive education in mainstream school environments. During 2025-26, up to December 2025, Rs 11.3 lakh was disbursed under this allowance, directly benefiting 194 students.
Targeted Financial Assistance Programs
In addition to escort allowances, the government provides a dedicated transport allowance for children with special needs who have severe disabilities. Data indicates that Rs 7 lakh was utilized for this purpose in 2025-26, aiding 92 students.
To encourage the continued education of girls with disabilities, a special stipend program has been implemented. This initiative aims to motivate retention in schools. In the last academic year, up to December 2025, Rs 5 lakh in state aid was provided to 265 girl students.
Furthermore, 25 students received specific aids and appliances designed to enhance their functional abilities and serve as assistive tools for improved productivity in their educational pursuits.
Major Grant to Sanjay School Society
The state's commitment extends to institutional support as well. A substantial grant-in-aid of Rs 15 crore was provided to the Sanjay School, an autonomous society that operates with 100% funding from the Goa government. This society oversees a network of six schools dedicated to the education of children with special needs, underscoring the government's integrated approach to expanding and strengthening special education infrastructure across the region.
