Panaji: The state recorded a steep fall in deaths from road accidents and other fatal incidents in May 2026 when compared with the same month last year. As per the traffic cell of Goa police, fatal accidents and the number of people killed in road accidents fell by 24% in 2026.
However, there has been an increase of 9% in road accidents in May 2026 as compared to the previous year. In May 2026, 242 accidents were reported as compared to 221 in May 2025. At the same time, there has been a 75% rise in grievous accidents. A total of 35 grievous accidents were registered in May 2026 as compared to 20 in May 2025.
In May last year, 29 fatal accidents were reported in the state as compared to only 22 fatal accidents reported last month. Last month, a total of 1,094 accidents were reported in Goa, as against 1,017 during the corresponding period of 2025. Traffic cell data said that 96% of accidents occurred due to rash and negligent driving. Traffic cells said that cars account for 41% of accidents followed by two-wheelers accounting for 43%.
A senior police officer said that strict enforcement and effective traffic control with sheer presence of police personnel on highways will go a long way in reducing accidents, including fatalities.
“Police personnel should book maximum traffic offenders with the sole purpose of reducing road accidents and should not book petty MV Act cases for increasing the number of challans or fine amount,” the officer added.
